Breaking Tradition to Build Tradition

With Christmas around the corner, I can’t help but think about traditions. We all have our rituals when it comes to holidays. Even our Sunday mornings tend to take a certain shape week after week.

The same is true of weddings. Some brides couldn’t dream of going without their something borrowed, blue, old or new. Perhaps you can’t imagine getting married without having had a bachelor party. Maybe the mother of the bride always bakes the wedding cake.

Whatever the traditions are in your family – or what you may read in the hundreds of wedding checklists you may find online – consider that all traditions started somewhere, and were once new. Your wedding day is YOUR wedding day. If there is something you would like to try on your wedding day that goes against the grain of “tradition,” there is no book of rules that says you absolutely can’t do it the way you want. Go ahead and make your wedding your own.

The couple above did their “first look” with the bride stationary. She didn’t want her heels and dress snagging on the leaves and sticks under her. It made for a beautiful new take on what has become a tradition in many weddings these days.
